Understanding Anxiety

5 min read

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy, and yet it remains widely misunderstood. At its core, anxiety is a survival system — the body's way of preparing us for danger. The racing heart, quick breathing and heightened alertness are all designed to keep us safe.

When the alarm becomes too sensitive

The difficulty arises when this alarm system becomes over-sensitive, firing in situations that are not truly dangerous — a work email, a social event, an uncertain future. The body responds as if a threat is present, and the mind searches for reasons to justify the feeling.

The anxiety cycle

Anxiety maintains itself through a cycle: anxious thoughts trigger physical sensations, which we interpret as confirmation that something is wrong, leading to avoidance or safety behaviours that prevent us learning the situation was manageable. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works by gently interrupting this cycle at several points.

There is a way forward

The encouraging truth is that anxiety is highly treatable. CBT is recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment, and most people who engage with therapy notice meaningful improvement. If anxiety is shaping your daily decisions, reaching out is a strong first step.
