The Approach
What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a practical, structured talking therapy — and one of the most researched and effective treatments in mental health care.
What CBT is
CBT is based on a simple but powerful idea: our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are all connected. When we're struggling, these connections can form unhelpful cycles that keep problems going — long after whatever started them. CBT focuses on what maintains a difficulty right now, and gives you practical tools to change it.
How it works
Together we map out your personal patterns — the situations, thoughts, feelings and responses that keep you stuck. Then, step by step, we test out new ways of thinking and responding. Sessions are collaborative and structured, and you'll practise skills between sessions so progress happens in real life, not just in the therapy room. Over time, you become your own therapist.
The evidence
CBT is the most extensively researched psychological therapy in the world, with decades of clinical trials supporting its effectiveness for anxiety, depression, panic disorder, PTSD, phobias, health anxiety and more. It is recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as a first-line treatment for many common mental health difficulties.
The CBT Cycle
How patterns keep themselves going
Each part of the cycle feeds the next. CBT helps you interrupt it — at any point.
Thoughts
“I'll mess this up”
Feelings
Anxiety, dread, tension
Behaviours
Avoiding, over-preparing
Beliefs reinforced
“See — I can't cope”
The good news: because everything is connected, changing one part of the cycle changes the whole pattern. That is exactly what we do in therapy — gently, practically and at your pace.
