A panic attack is one of the most frightening experiences a person can have. The heart pounds, breathing becomes shallow, the world can feel unreal — and many people genuinely believe they are having a heart attack or losing control.
What is actually happening
Panic is the fight-or-flight response firing at full intensity. Every symptom — racing heart, dizziness, tingling, breathlessness — is the body preparing for action. Uncomfortable, yes. Dangerous, no. A panic attack cannot harm you, and it always passes.
Why fear of panic fuels panic
Panic disorder develops when we begin fearing the attacks themselves. We monitor our bodies for warning signs, avoid places where escape feels difficult, and interpret normal sensations as the start of an attack — which triggers exactly what we feared.
How CBT breaks the cycle
CBT for panic teaches you what the sensations really are, removes the catastrophic interpretations, and gradually rebuilds trust in your body. It is one of the most effective treatments in all of mental health care, often producing change within a small number of sessions.
